Truck Security. How to prepare for a long trip.
Batten down the Hatches
This video shows the security system that we had installed in the cab of the truck. We will only be taking a few things that are very near & dear to us so we wanted to make certain that whilst we are back country camping in a national park our things were safe. We knew that we should get locks on the windows but didn’t really have a plan for the “smash & grab” type event. We stopped into a pick up store that was close to our old house. The place was jammed packed & luckily Carl, the owner, asked us what we needed. We took him outside to show him the truck cap & told him that we needed some locks. He took the time to listen to what we thought we needed and then asked a question that so many sales people forget to ask “So what are you really doing?” After we described our trip, the types of items that would be in the back of the truck and how we might be away from the vehicle overnight he suggested the outfit that you see in the video. He took us behind the building to the workshop or modification area. He started to get excited about how they could use these bars & they can be cut & they are coated with rubber & guy talk, guy talk, guy talk. All I heard was that no one would be able to get into the windows. We left the truck at the shop for a few days and the video is the day that we picked it up. We were very happy. We offered Carl the option to advertise on the side of the truck for the cost of a car stereo & we are still waiting on the reply. C’mon Carl!
After leaving Carl’s we took the truck to Wendy’s Custom Upholstery up the street. The drivers seat had been badly damaged by the previous owner and we had looked for a replacement seat for months with no luck. We couldn’t drive 7000 miles on a seat without any padding so we decided to have some foam added and the fabric repaired. Dave at Wendy’s did an excellent job and took extra time to repair the arm rest. We forgot the video camera that day or you would see a pic of Dave & Wendy too.
So far the S10 has had the air compressor replaced, the radiator fixed, cruise control added,a complete function check and the work listed above. It now has double the amount in it then it’s worth and we need tires, window tinting, etc.! I guess if it gets us to Costa Rica safely then it will be worth every penny.
